7 steps to flip your clients’ mindset
One of the biggest challenges we see with people who experience unemployment is their mindset.
Often the limitations around mindset come from beliefs or past experiences that have led them to think they can’t achieve things, that they can’t overcome challenges or that it’s easier to give up or not try something new.
Knowing your clients’ mindset is critical, as this will help you to support them.
According to Carol Dweck, a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University who has done extensive research into the concept, we have either:
- A fixed mindset – where we believe that our abilities, skills and talents are fixed traits that can’t be changed or developed.
- A growth mindset – where we believe we can develop our abilities, skills and talents through dedication, repetition and hard work.
When you think about your clients, you may see examples of where their mindset is fixed.
Examples of a fixed mindset:
I’m not smart enough to do training or a course – if your clients believe that they can’t learn new things, this may hold them back from finding a job they will enjoy and succeed in.
I’m terrible at interviews – one or two bad experiences in an interview can make your clients feel like they will never interview well. However, with support and practice, they can turn this mindset around.
I will never have my dream job – the concept of their potential being pre-determined plays a significant role in a fixed mindset.
Developing a growth mindset
These seven steps can help your clients develop a growth mindset. With your coaching skills, you can help them to challenge beliefs, use positive self-talk, and lean into their strengths to promote a new approach to their employment journey,
- Create a powerful, positive belief – help your clients to come up with a new belief in themselves that reflects their skills and abilities. ‘
EXAMPLE: I believe that I can learn new things.
- Re-frame failure – replace the word ‘fail’ with ‘learn’ and see failure as an opportunity to learn from experiences and apply what you have learned next time around.
EXAMPLE: I learnt a lot from that interview, and I’ll do this differently next time.
- Become more self-aware – help your clients to uncover their talents, strengths, and weaknesses. Bounce Online is a fantastic program that helps people learn about these key attributes.
- Get curious – encourage your clients to ask questions and reflect on their experiences and learnings. How could they do something differently next time?
- Be comfortable with hard things – your clients will inevitably come up against problems or difficulties. Help them to think of hard things as challenges and make it ok not to succeed every time. Remember, ‘failure’ is just learning.
- Lean into your strengths – it’s much easier to succeed when you are passionate about what you’re doing. Talk to your clients about what they are passionate about and help them do more of what they love.
- Don’t give up – it takes a lot of hard work to succeed, but it takes even more than working hard—you must be tenacious, overcoming the obstacles and getting back up after each time you fall.
